Two Victories for Mäkäräinen and Kauppinen

|Finland’s Kaisa Mäkäräinen and Jarkko Kauppinen won both the sprint and pursuit competitions this past weekend at IBU Roller Cup 1 in Kontiolahti.
World Cup Total Score winner Mäkäräinen first won the women’s 7.5K sprint. Despite two prone penalties, she finished one minute ahead of teammate Mari Laukkanen, who had three penalties. Third went to Estonia’s Kadri Lehtla, 1:21 back, also with three penalties.
In Sunday’s pursuit competition, Mäkäräinen easily won with a 2:49 bulge over Lehtla who slipped ahead of Laukkanen. Mäkäräinen had five penalties, including three in the final standing stage. Lehtla had four penalties to Laukkanen’s nine.
Kauppinen Matches Mäkäräinen
Kauppinen was as dominant as his female counterpart, taking the sprint one minute ahead of his teammate Matti Hakala. Both athletes had one penalty. Ville Simola, with three penalties finished 1:01 back.
In the next day’s 12.5K pursuit, Kauppinen shot clean in the prone stages, but then picked up three standing penalties. He finished 1:17 ahead of young Ahti Toivanen, who had five penalties, but moved up from sixth in the sprint. Completing the Finnish sweep was Timo Antila who finished 1:34 back.
Estonians Double-up for Junior Titles
Estonian juniors Johanna Talihärm Jan Treier and showed form in claiming both the sprint and pursuit titles.
Talihärm, with five penalties finished 1:18 ahead of Ulla-Maarit Helinurm, with three penalties in the pursuit. Finland’s Suvi Minkkinen, with five penalties moved from fifth in the sprint to third in the pursuit.
In junior men’s pursuit Treier topped teammate Peeter Kirss. Although Treier had nine penalties, his speed kept him 1:15 of Kirss, who only had six penalties. Antti Repo of Finland maintained his third place from the sprint, finishing 1:33 back.
