|Sweden realigned its World Cup team and staff last week as it started training for the new season and the 2014 Sochi Olympic Winter Games which are less than two years away.
Unified A-Team; Coaching Assignments
This season, Sweden will have just a single A-Team that includes both men and women. Accordingly, Jonas Johansson, previously men’s coach now moves into the position of shooting coach for both men and women while former women’s coach Marko Laaksonen now is responsible for training the whole squad. With this new set-up, it is hoped that the combined expertise will improve the quality of the training and thus result in further improvement in results in the coming seasons.
Focus on Sochi
Sweden’s team leader Staffan Eklund commented, “Gathering our strengths like this is a natural step, and it is beneficial to do so in plenty of time before the Olympics, so that we all know what is expected of us. The nominees for the A squad are those we primarily believe will be competing in the Sochi Olympics.”
The A-Team, although missing the retired Helena Ekholm and Anna Maria Nilsson still has plenty of star power, especially among the men with three medallists from the 2012 IBU World Championships; Björn Ferry, Carl-Johan Bergman, and Fredrik Lindström. Also on the squad are: Ingela Andersson, Ted Armgren, Jenny Jonsson, Magnus Jonsson, Anna-Karin Strömstedt, and Christoffer Eriksson.
While this group is focused on Sochi, the Swedish Development Team with the working name, Korea Group will compete mainly on the IBU Cup circuit. Johan Hagström will coach this group that is aiming for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games. The Development Team includes: Gabriel Stegmayer, Elisabeth Högberg, Viktor Agestam, Peppe Femling, Emelie Larsson, Daniel Gustafsson, Åsa Lif, Elin Mattsson, and Tobias Arwidsson.
Sweden’s A-Team started their official training for the new season last week with a camp and a sponsor event in Stockholm.
