Dahlmeier Leads German Women to Relay Win

Germany won the women’s 4 X 6K relay today after Laura Dahlmeier took the lead on the last loop and pulled away to a 1:09:27.1 win with one penalty and seven spare rounds. Ukraine finished second 11.9 seconds back with six spare rounds. Third went to Norway, with 10 spare rounds, 21.2 seconds back.

Russia Wins Sochi Men’s Relay

Russia finally won a competition in the Laura Biathlon Stadium to the delight of the Russian fans, when they claimed the men’s 4 X7.5K relay today, with one penalty and six spare rounds in 1:09:50.8. Second went to Germany with 10 spare rounds, 38.3 seconds back, followed by the Czech Republic with 13 spare rounds, 42.9 seconds back.

Gwizdon Wins Sochi Sprint Battle

Poland’s Magdalena Gwizdon won for the second time in her career overcoming heavy snow on already slow tracks to win the women’s sprint in 25:28.7, with clean shooting. Second went to Slovakia’s Anastasiya Kuzmina, 10.2 seconds back with one penalty. Third went to Norway’s Tora Berger, also with one penalty, 13.7 seconds back.

Fourcade Overwhelms Sprint Field

Martin Fourcade literally left the other 101 men in the men’s sprint lying in the snow as he shot clean and claimed a 42.3 second victory over Russia’s Evegeny Ustyugov, with one penalty. Norwegian Henrik L’Abee Lund shot clean to finish third, 51 seconds back.

Fourcade Charges Back to Win 20K

Martin Fourcade of France won the men’s 20K individual after taking the lead for the first time at the 18.8K split. Fourcade had a single penalty, in his 49:40.6 win. He finished just 6.9 seconds ahead of clean shooting Andi Birnbacher of Germany. Third went to Ukrainian Serhiy Semenov, who also shot clean. 31.9 seconds back.

Domracheva Comes Back for 15K Win

Darya Domracheva of Belarus overcame two penalties in the final standing stage to win the women’s 15K individual in 45:45.2, at the 2014 Olympic Biathlon venue in Sochi. The two penalties were her only missed shots of the day. Russia’s Olga Zaitseva, shooting clean, finished second 34.6 seconds back. Third went to Tora Berger of Norway with one penalty, 46.8 seconds back.
