Sergey Semenov: “Starting from Scratch”

After all of the huge volume and hard work that athletes have put in during the summer, very soon most of the teams will go to their first on-snow training camps. The leader of the Ukrainian National team, who also won the crystal globe for the individual competition, Sergey Semenov is looking forward for the first snow camp as well. He quickly pointed out that the award he received last season was very important and pleasant for him, but now he tries to forget about it. Semenov will start the new season from scratch with new goals.

New Season Fast Approaching; Fall Training Update

Over the past month, most teams have been switching to more biathlon specific training; i.e. more rollerskiing/shooting combination training, less long cycling tours, and national rollerski competitions as pre-season tests. It is just over two months until the new season kicks off with IBU Cup 1 in Idre, Sweden on November 28 and the BMW World Cup season starts the next day with the mixed relay in Östersund.

Finland’s Marco Laaksonen Says, “Hit the Targets”

"We have two top athletes, Kaisa and Mari; after there is a big gap," is how Finland's Head Coach Marco Laaksonen sums up his team. "We have to do something with everyone else in order for them to move up in the results, so we are focusing on hitting targets. If we can hit more targets, their results will improve." That is just part of the plan to make the Finnish team, known for mostly for Kaisa's exploits, simply get better and be more competitive. During a camp in Obertilliach with his 4-person A team, Laaksonen talked about his strategy and what the team has been doing this summer after the IBU World Championships last season in Kontiolahti.

Belarusian Team Back Home at Raubichi

After extended camps at Pokljuka and in France, the Belarusian men and women are back home at Raubichi as the new season approaches. They have just completed a two–week camp, will take a short break and return on September 23 for another training block and some national summer biathlon competitions.

End of Summer Update: Catching Up with Kaisa

With summer quickly fading into fall, Kaisa Mäkäräinen was training in Obertilliach, Austria with three other teammates and Finland's Head Coach Marco Laaksonen. Mäkäräinen has been all over central Europe this summer, "following the sun," as she describes her travels, with a laugh. She quickly added, "I was home in Finland for most of August and it was quite nice." However, on a 12 degree Celsius, cloudy day, she admits that, "summer may be over."

Five Questions for Jakov Fak

When we last saw Jakov Fak, he was crossing the finish line as the winner of the final competition of the 2014-15 season, the men's mass start in Khanty Mansiysk. As a new season approaches, Fak is looking forward to another season like or better than last year. That means topping 3rd in the World Cup Total Score and his Mass Start World Championship. Without being specific about his goals, he commented, "When I look at last season and my third place in the Total Score; the big difference is victories."

Romania hosted this past weekend's IBU Summer Biathlon World Championships, the first major biathlon competition ever conducted in that country. However, the sport is quite small in Romania while its World Cup team struggles to be competitive.
