Stars and Teams in Season-Opening Mixed Relay

The mixed relay competition tomorrow at 15:30 in Östersund has become the standard opening competition of the season each year. It is a perfect fit to get things started. Twenty-two teams are entered; predicting who will win is definitely a challenge, after looking at the rosters. Soft Opening

Rastorgujevs and Nowakowska-Ziemniak Win Sprints

Andrejs Rastorgujevs of Latvia over came two penalties to claim a the victory in the first competition, the men’s 10K sprint, of the 2014-15 IBU Cup season in 26:02.5.Later in the afternoon, Weronika Nowakowska-Ziemniak of Poland claimed the first women’s sprint title in 21:36.8, with one penalty. Rastorgujevs finished two seconds ahead of Norway’s Lars Berger, also with two penalties. Third went to Germany’s Michael Willeitner, who shot clean, 4.3 seconds back. Berger’s teammate Erland Bjoentegaard, with one penalty, 8.3 seconds back was fourth, while France’s Florent Claude, shot clean was fifth, 17.5 seconds back.

A New Biathlon Season Opens…In Snowy Beitostølen

Much of central Europe is bereft of snow and actually any winter weather. However, here in small resort village Beitostølen, Norway hosting IBU Cup 1; this small resort village and the surrounding area is already deep in winter. This week saw 45 cm of new snow that guarantees good conditions for the two competition days.

Season Opens This Weekend: Beitostølen Video

This is the most anticipated weekend of the year for biathletes with the opening BMW IBU World Cup Biathlon mixed relay in Östersund on Sunday and IBU Cup sprints in Beitostølen on Saturday and Sunday.

France, Belarus, Czech & More: Alfred Eder Interview

The teams from France and Czech Republic finished fifth and seventh, respectively in the Nations Cup for both men and women. Yet these two teams were big players for the whole 2013-14 biathlon season, while adding to their reputations at the Sochi OWG. Likewise, the 6th place Belarusian women, now coached by Alfred Eder should maintain their ranking and none other than Finland's Kaisa Mäkäräinen should again contend for the Total Score title.

Germany Preview: Mark Kirchner Video Interview

Germany finished second and third in the Women and Men's Nations Cup last season; the days of domination of virtually every seasonal category in biathlon are past. Yet, at the same time, both teams remain a force in the sport, just not at the level of several years ago. This year should be another solid season for the men with a returning squad of reliable veterans, while the women face a challenge with a cast of younger women and not returning stars, save the returning–from-injury Miriam Gössner.

Norwegian Women: Eckhoffs Lead the Way

Stian Eckhoff moved into the Women's Head Coach position for Norway when his colleague Egil Gjelland shifted over to the Men's Head Coach job. Ironically, as he moved to the top coaching spot, his sister, Tiril moved into the top spot as the best Norwegian woman after her sterling Olympic performances. Her two Bronze medals in the mass start and women's relay plus the Gold medal in the mixed relay and a sparkling personality made her a media favorite.
