Afternoon Elegance with Kaisa, Dasha and Friends

Just before the holidays, a dozen top athletes spent most of an afternoon shooting photos for the annual IBU Photo Calendar. This year the theme was "Shining Stars."Accordingly, the athletes were dressed to the nines, as if going out for an elegant evening on the town.

Editor’s Choice Wrap-up with Dasha and Simon

This past week in Ruhpolding has been full of memorable moments from the Norwegian Men's Relay and Johannes Boe's and Fanny Horn's sprint wins to Simon Schempp's hometown in the mass start and Darya Domracheva's comeback win in the mass start plus two other podoiums. Here is a quick recap of this just completed World Cup, Now it is on to Antholz!

Schempp Wins Photo-Finish Mass Start

Simon Schempp of Germany ended up tumbling at the finish of the mass start today, but came out the winner in a three-man photo finish, claiming the victory in 35:42.8. Second went to Quentin Fillon Maillet of France and third to Michal Slesingr of Czech Republic, all with the same time as well as with clean shooting. Emil Hegle Svendsen of Norway finished fourth, with one penalty, 2 seconds back, with teammate Ole Einar Björndalen also with one penalty, was 2.6 seconds back. Russia's Anton Shipulin was sixth, with two penalties, 7.8 seconds back. Martin Fourcade with the Yellow Bib finished 21st with four penalties, 1:19.8 back.

Germany Wins Mixed Relay in Ridnaun

The German team of Annika Knoll, Karolin Horchler, Johannes Kuehn and Christoph Stephan won the last competition at IBU Cup 5 in Ridnaun in 1:26:39.0. The battle for the first place continued until the finish line between German and French athletes, but Christoph Stephan showed pretty good speed on the last loop and overtook Antonin Guigonnat on the finish line, winning just by .4 seconds. Both Germany and France used 9 spares. Russia finished third, using 11 spare rounds plus 2 penalty loops, 1:12.2 minutes behind. Norway was fourth, Ukraine finished fifth and sixth place went to Czech Republic.

Another Mass Start Comeback for Domracheva

Belarusian Darya Domracheva pulled off another of her classic comebacks to win the women's mass start today with three penalties, in 35:17.5. After penalties in the first prone and first standing, she fell back to the middle of the pack before regaining the lead and eventually the victory. Second went to Germany's Franziska Preuss, with two penalties, 16.5 seconds back, while Veronika Vitkova of Czech Republic finished third, with three penalties, 22.9nseocnds back. Valja Semerenko of Ukraine, also with two penalties finished fourth, 23.3 seconds back. Fifth went to France's Anais Bescond, with one penalty, 24.2 seconds back, while Weronika Nowakowska Ziemniak of Poland finished sixth, with one penalty, 33 seconds back. Kaisa Mäkäräinen in the Yellow Bib finished seventh, with four penalties, 40.6 seconds back.

Johannes Thingnes Boe Buries Sprint Field

Norway's Johannes Thingnes Boe buried the men's sprint field today, claiming a clean-shooting victory in 23:59.2, 24.5 seconds ahead of Germany's Simon Schempp, who also shot clean. The young Norwegian led from start to finish. Third went to Schempp's teammate Arnd Peiffer, with one penalty, 57.5 seconds back. The next three men all had a single penalty, with fourth going to Russia's Anton Shipulin, 1:04 back; fifth to Latvia's Andrejs Rastorgujevs, 1:05.9 back and sixth to another German Benedikt Doll, 1:06.7 back. The Yellow/Red Bib Martin Fourcade finished with two penalties in 25th place.

Making Moves: Behind the Green Screen

Television viewers worldwide are seeing something in the biathlon broadcasts new since the sprint competition last week in Oberhof; athlete photos in the right corner of the screen. These new graphics with the athletes in non-competition clothing pop-up each time an athlete’s name is introduced.

Birkeland and Gössner Win Pursuits in Ridnaun

Finally the first pursuit on IBU Cup this season was held today. The pursuits in Duszniki Zdrój were canceled due to the bad tracks condition and luck of snow, but here the weather made a new surprise; too much heavy snow! Norwegian Lars Helge Birkeland, with perfect shooting scored his first personal win this season in the men's pursuit in 40:12.4. In the afternoon, Germany's Miriam Gössner added to her winning streak by claiming the women's pursuit in 34:28.5, with five penalties.

First Career Win for Fanny Horn in Sprint

Norway's Fanny Welle-Strand Horn won for the first time in her World Cup career by taking the women's 7.5K sprint in 21:07.4. She finished 3.4 seconds ahead of Belarusian Darya Domracheva. Both women shot clean. Third went to Horn's teammate Tiril Eckhoff, with one penalty, 9.3 seconds back. Valja Semerenko of Ukraine shot clean in fourth, 21 seconds back. Mari Laukkanen of Finland had a single penalty in fifth place, 22.7 seconds back. Clean-shooting Franziska Hildebrand of Germany finished sixth, 28.6 seconds back.

Slepov and Gössner Win in Ridnaun

The weather brings a lot of surprises this season. As in Oberhof and Ruhpolding, everything has changed in Ridnaun just in one day; sun and blue skies on training day were changed by snow and fog during competitions. 133 men competed today, trying to claim the victory. Alexey Slepov of Russia won the men's sprint at IBU Cup 5 in Ridnaun in 28:18.0, while Miriam Gössner of Germany scored her second sprint victory in a row in 23:51.7 with one penalty.
