A New Year; Three Big World Cups Ahead

Every athlete and fan hope that 2016 brings more than just more great competitions, but the one ingredient that was severely lacking during December 2015: snow! Whether or not that while stuff falls from the skies is a big question mark, especially in the coming days. Still these next three BMW IBU World Cup biathlons are traditionally some of the biggest events of the season outside of the IBU World Championships and this year should be no exception.

Pokljuka Wrap-up Video: Sunshine, Shooting & Yellow Bib

Pokljuka lived up to Slovenia's image as the sunny side of the Alps, with brilliant windless days perfect for clean shooting and spectacular action on the tracks. These final competitions of the first trimester closed with Jean Guillaume Beatrix's first career World Cup win over Emil Hegle Svendsen, while Kaisa Mäkäräinen topped the women's field. As the World Cup circus leaves Pokljuka; Martin Fourcade and Gabriela Soukalova are wearing the Yellow Bibs for the holiday season. Our "Pokljuka Wrap-up: Sunshine, Shooting and Yellow Bibs," is full of sunny highlights as we head into 2016.

Jean Guillaume Beatrix Tops Svendsen for Mass Start Win

France’s Jean Guillaume Beatrix shot clean to claim his first-ever World Cup win in today’s mass start, covering the 15K in 35:33.7. Norway’s Emil Hegle Svendsen finished second, a mere 0.3 second back with one penalty. His teammate Ole Einar Björndalen finished third with two penalties, and was third, 2.5 seconds back.

IBU Development: Material Distribution

Early each season, the IBU holds a Material Distribution Day in Hochfilzen where teams big and small receive varying amounts of gear. This day is a part of the IBU Development program in cooperation with IBU Partner/Suppliers. The Partner/Suppliers provide more than one million Euros in equipment from skis and poles to race suits, ammunition and ski wax. This distribution gives top-notch material to athletes who would otherwise have to buy this equipment to compete at the World Cup, IBU Cup or Junior levels. The “IBU Development: Material Distribution” video offers insight into this program that is crucial to the further development of biathlon worldwide.

Another Sprint Win for Simon Schempp

Clean-shooting Simon Schempp of Germany won the men’s 10K sprint at Pokljuka in 23:02.5 seconds. Norway’s Ole Einar Björndalen finished second, 15.2 back while Russia’s Evgeniy Garanichev in third place, was 25.1 seconds back. Both Björndalen and Garanichev matched Schempp on the shooting range.

Ricco Gross: New Team, New Motivation Video

Russian Men's Coach Ricco Gross said earlier in the season, "I am responsible for the success of Men's Biathlon in Russia." Now after just one podium in Östersund, his team took a big step forward last week with places 4, 5 and 6 in the sprint, Anton Shipulin's third place in the pursuit and then a win in the men's relay. In the video, "Ricco Gross: New Team, New Motivation," Gross comments on his first few months coaching the Russian men, his goals, and that the team was getting "better step-by-step."

Shipulin Heroics Give Russia Relay Victory

Anton Shipulin with a furiously fast, but measured final loop overcame Norway's Emil Hegle Svendsen in the final loop to give Russia the win in the men's relay in 1:14:40.2 with sic spare rounds. Shipulin and teammates, Alexey Volkov, Evgeny Garanichev and Dmitry Malyshko finished 3.1 seconds ahead of second place Norway, with seven spares.. Third went to France, with six spares, 1:01.9 back.
