Östersund Wrap-up Video: Gabi and Martin in Yellow

The first week of the 2015-16 BMW IBU World Cup Biathlon season was full of highlights: Norwegian Relay wins, Ole’s historic 94th victory, and the Italian women on the podium. Kaisa Wins Pursuit with Last Loop Heroics

Finland's Kaisa Mäkäräinen took the lead for the first time at the 8.8K mark today and held it to win the women's 10K pursuit in 30:45.1, with two penalties. Second went to the 15K winner, Dorothea Wierer of Italy, with one penalty, 1.9 seconds back. Germany's Franziska Hildebrand shot clean but finished third, 3.3 seconds back.

Fourcade Wire-to-Wire in Pursuit Victory

Martin Fourcade of France literally buried the field in the men's 12.5K pursuit to claim victory in 31:22.4, despite three penalties and easing back in the final kilometer when victory was assured. His wire-to-wire win left second place Arnd Peiffer 35.1 seconds back with a single penalty. Third went to Fourcade's teammate, Quentin Fillon Maillet, with two penalties, 55.2 seconds back.

Clean-Shooting Soukalova Takes Sprint

Late starter Gabriela Soukalova of Czech Republic shot clean to claim the title in the women's 7.5K sprint this afternoon in 19:46.2. Second went Federika Sanfilippo of Italy, also shooting clean with the first podium of her career, 15 seconds back. Third, just as in the 15K on Thursday was Olena Pidhrushna of Ukraine, with one penalty, 38.4 seconds back.

Fourcade Buries the Field in Wind-blown Sprint

Martin Fourcade of France returned to the top of the podium today by taking the wind-blown men's 10K sprint in 24:02 with two penalties. Fourcade's blazing tour of the 10K course put him 51.6 seconds ahead of Germany's Arnd Peiffer with single penalty. Third place went to Norway's Ole Einar Björndalen, also with two penalties, 55.2 seconds back.

A Few Questions for…Emil Hegle Svendsen Video

It is a new season; the long-term focus for every biathlete is on the IBU World Championships in Oslo. As the home team, the Norwegians enter the new season with big goals and high expectations from the hometown fans. Sochi Olympic Gold medalist and multi-World Champion Emil Hegle Svendsen had a disappointing 2014-15 season. The Norwegian star, with 38 career World Cup victories is hoping this year for a return to form that will bring him Gold in Oslo.

First Career Win for Dorothea Wierer

Italy's Dorothea Wierer shot clean and flew around the tough Östersund tracks to claim her first career win in tonight's women's 15K individual in 42:17. Second place went to Marie Dorin Habert of France with two penalties, 14.1 seconds back. With a furious rush in the last loop, late starter clean-shooting Olena Pidhrushna of Ukraine claimed third, 37.8 seconds back.

Ole Einar Björndalen, King of the 20K

The "King of Biathlon" Ole Einar Björndalen of Norway proved more than worthy of his title once again claiming victory in the 20K individual this evening in 50:14.5. Björndalen, who turns 42 in January, shot clean, leaving Germany's Simon Schempp, with one penalty in second, 27.1 seconds back. Russia's clean-shooting Alexey Volkov finished third, 38.2 seconds back.
