IBU Development: Material Distribution

Early each season, the IBU holds a Material Distribution Day in Hochfilzen where teams big and small receive varying amounts of gear. This day is a part of the IBU Development program in cooperation with IBU Partner/Suppliers. The Partner/Suppliers provide more than one million Euros in equipment from skis and poles to race suits, ammunition and ski wax. This distribution gives top-notch material to athletes who would otherwise have to buy this equipment to compete at the World Cup, IBU Cup or Junior levels. The “IBU Development: Material Distribution” video offers insight into this program that is crucial to the further development of biathlon worldwide.

Another Sprint Win for Simon Schempp

Clean-shooting Simon Schempp of Germany won the men’s 10K sprint at Pokljuka in 23:02.5 seconds. Norway’s Ole Einar Björndalen finished second, 15.2 back while Russia’s Evgeniy Garanichev in third place, was 25.1 seconds back. Both Björndalen and Garanichev matched Schempp on the shooting range.

Ricco Gross: New Team, New Motivation Video

Russian Men's Coach Ricco Gross said earlier in the season, "I am responsible for the success of Men's Biathlon in Russia." Now after just one podium in Östersund, his team took a big step forward last week with places 4, 5 and 6 in the sprint, Anton Shipulin's third place in the pursuit and then a win in the men's relay. In the video, "Ricco Gross: New Team, New Motivation," Gross comments on his first few months coaching the Russian men, his goals, and that the team was getting "better step-by-step."

Shipulin Heroics Give Russia Relay Victory

Anton Shipulin with a furiously fast, but measured final loop overcame Norway's Emil Hegle Svendsen in the final loop to give Russia the win in the men's relay in 1:14:40.2 with sic spare rounds. Shipulin and teammates, Alexey Volkov, Evgeny Garanichev and Dmitry Malyshko finished 3.1 seconds ahead of second place Norway, with seven spares.. Third went to France, with six spares, 1:01.9 back.

First-ever Relay Victory for Italian Women

The Italian team of Lisa Vittozzi, Karin Oberhofer, Federika Sanfilippo and Dorothea Wierer won the Women’s relay today in 1:05:32.6 with eight spare rounds. This was the first-ever relay victory for the Italian women. Germany was second a mere .2 seconds back with 7 spare rounds and no penalties. Ukraine finished third; 13.1 seconds back also with ten spare rounds.

Comeback Victory in Sprint for Simon Schempp

.Germany's Simon Schempp after an eight-penalty 77th place in last week's sprint at Östersund, came back today with a clean-shooting to claim the men's 10K sprint here today in 23:52.3. Martin Fourcade, wearing Yellow and Red had a single penalty as he finished second 9.9 seconds back, with Norway's Tarjei Boe shooting clean to claim third, 18.9 seconds back.

German Sweep: First Career Win for Franziska Hildebrand

Germany’s Franziska Hildebrand scored career World Cup win number 1 today taking the top spot in the women’s 7.5K sprint in 20:04.1, with clean shooting. Germany swept the podium with second going to Maren Hammerschmidt, also clean but 15.1 seconds back. Third went to her teammate Miriam Gössner, with one penalty, 21 seconds back.

Inside the “New” Hochfilzen Stadium

Back in the 1990's, the Hochfilzen Biathlon Stadium looked nothing like what spectators will experience this weekend; it was a small stadium equal to what may be found at an IBU Cup today. Now, renewed modern stadium with large wax cabins, changing rooms, new tunnels and a huge media room is in place, preparing not just for a World Cup but the 2017 IBU World Championships.
