Selina Gasparin Claims Snowy Sprint

Switzerland’s Selina Gasparin gained her the first World Cup victory of her career, winning this morning’s snowy 7.5K sprint in 23:16.9, with one penalty. Second went to Veronika Vitkova of the Czech Republic, who shot clean but finished 1.2 seconds back. Clean-shooting Irina Starykh of Russia with her first World Cup podium finished third, 2.1 seconds back.

Hochfilzen Video Course Tour with Luki Hofer

Although it is snowing today in Hochfilzen, Luki Hofer of Italy skied around the 3.3K loop yesterday under beautiful sunny skies. He comments on the conditions and the points out his favorite parts of the tracks that will be used in the next three days.

Inside Track Preview with Martin and Gabriela Video

Martin Fourcade of France and Gabriela Soukalova of the Czech Republic come to Hochfilzen wearing the Yellow Bibs. The experience is nothing new for Fourcade who was in yellow all last season. However, for Soukalova, Friday's sprint will only be her second time in yellow; the cancelled women's pursuit last Sunday does not count.

In the Sunshine at Hochfilzen

The sunshine that filled the skies above Austria's Tirol was a breath of fresh air for every coach and athlete during unofficial training today in Hochfilzen. Lowell Bailey of the US commented at Östersund airport on Monday that all he wanted to see was "just 5 minutes of bright sunshine and I will be a happy man." He got his wish today. After an extended period of almost non-existent sunlight and stormy bitter conditions in Östersund, today's brilliant sunshine, blue, cloudless skies and calm winds raised everyone's mind, body and spirit.

Competition Cancelled in Östersund Video

The women's 10K pursuit was cancelled today midway through the competition, due to the extremely high winds that created unfair competitive conditions and raised concerns for the safety of the athletes.

Women’s Pursuit Stopped, Cancelled; Men’s Cancelled

The women's 10K pursuit was stopped this morning in Östersund, due to unfair conditions and safety concerns from tornado-like winds. The competition jury met shortly after it was stopped and decided to cancel the competition. The men's competition was first delayed for 30 minutes and then cancelled by the jury due to the ongoing winds.

Win Number Two for Martin Fourcade

Martin Fourcade of France won for the second time this season, taking the men’s 10K sprint in 26:56, with one penalty. Fredrik Lindström of Sweden came close to Fourcade by shooting clean, but finished 6.5 seconds back. Tim Burke of the USA in third place also shot clean and finished 31.3 seconds back.

Focused Fourcade Takes Men’s 20K

Like Gabriela Soukalova did earlier in the day, Martin Fourcade of France started the new season exactly where he ended the last one, with a victory. Fourcade, obviously wanting to erase the memory of three penalties in Sunday’s mixed relay, shot clean today while covering the 20K in 50:10.9. Simon Eder of Austria, a late starter at number 85 finished second, with one penalty, 2:06.1 back, just ahead of his teammate Daniel Mesotitsch, with one penalty, 2:20.2 back.

Soukalova Opens New Season with 15K Win

Gabriela Soukalova of the Czech Republic picked up the new season exactly where she ended the 2012-13 season, at the top of the podium. Soukalova won the women’s 15K individual this afternoon in 47:56, with two penalties. Anastasiya Kuzmina of Slovakia finished second, 1.2 seconds back, also with two penalties. Third went to Marie Laure Brunet of France, 16.2 seconds back, with one penalty.
