6 days until the season-opening Mixed Relays in Östersund! Only one team had a better all-around performance last season than the French Team and that was Germany. France finished third in both the Men's and Women's Nations Cup, with Martin Fourcade claiming the World Cup Total Score plus the Sprint and Pursuit Cups, while Marie Dorin-Habert won the Sprint and Pursuit World Championships and Silver medals in the relay and mixed relay. Yet they were not the total story for France, the men also claimed a Bronze relay medal, and were part of the mixed relay Silver. 10 days until the season-opening Mixed Relays in Östersund! Beyond that there was a share of the Mixed Relay Cup with the women, young Johannes Thingnes Boe in 5th in the Total Score and five WCH medals by Sprint World Champion Tarjei Boe. 12 days until the season-opening Mixed Relays in Östersund! Last season ended in Khanty Mansiysk, Russia with Anton Shipulin on the podium three times in three competitions, but missing the victory in the World Cup Total Score, with second place behind Martin Fourcade. Shipulin's excellent season once again was the highlight reel for the Russian men. Yet this traditionally strong team still managed to finish fourth in the World Cup Total Score, with Shipulin winning the mass start crystal globe and the men's relay doing the same despite their disappointing fourth place at the IBU World Championships. Many nations would be thrilled with any of the above results, but with Russia's rich biathlon heritage, both the team and fans expected more.

Östersund Countdown—German Powerhouse Returns

19 Days until the Season-Opening Mixed Relays in Östersund, where Germany looks like it have one of the best all-around teams. This is not the glory days of the early 2000's but the combined German men and women definitely look like they will be a powerhouse team this season. It was not that long ago, that it all seemed like doom and gloom for the German Biathlon teams; accidents, juniors moving up almost too quickly to the World Cup and retirements took a toll on the team's once renowned depth. There were only two medals in Sochi, by Erik Lesser and the men's relay team.
