Biathletes Serve Up Coffee at Charity Event

Two Slovakian biathletes were among the country's sports stars who recently took part in fund-raiser for a cancer charity in Banska Bystrica. During the event, two-time Olympic Gold medalist Anastasiya Kuzmina and her teammate Matej Kazar served coffee at two coffee houses in the city center.

Retiring From Biathlon: Part 1, the Men

Athletes retire from their chosen sport on a regular basis for many reasons. In a sport like biathlon, most athletes live by the four-year Olympic cycle. So it comes as no surprise that many have ended their careers at the end of this Olympic season. Many announced their intentions long ago but several made the decision recently, like Sochi relay Gold medalist Evgeny Ustyugov.

Martin and Kaisa Part 2: Top 5 Women

Maybe it just was not in the cards for Kaisa Mäkäräinen to stand on the podium in Sochi. She said, "My skiing has been good all season, but my shooting in Sochi was just not enough for those conditions."However, in the end, all of the stars aligned for her to claim her second World Cup Total Score title, plus the small globes for the sprint and pursuit. Her Total Score victory was a bit of a surprise as the gracious and smiling Mäkäräinen explained after the Oslo mass start. "Of course I wanted to believe that I could be here wearing the Yellow Bib at this time, and be in good shape this season but if you want to be really honest, maybe I was dreaming about this."

Coaching Changes in Germany and Austria

This is the time of the year, especially in Olympic seasons when the coaching merry-go-round starts, with retirements, non-renewals of contracts and moves to new positions. Germany announced the changes in their biathlon coaching ranks just this week, while Austria announced that a new coach would be hired soon.

“More Crystal Globes than Arms to Carry Them”

"I have more Crystal Globes than arms to carry them," was Women's World Cup Total Score titlist Kaisa Mäkäräinen's comment when she realized that she would be taking three of the prized trophies home from Oslo. Of course, her male counterpart Martin Fourcade, who won the Men's World Cup Total Score title, was in bigger trouble, carrying four heavy crystal trophies as he boarded the plane.
